Shingle Roofing
Shingles are the most common roof here and the least forgiving of poor detailing. The system matters more than the shingle.
Request Shingle RoofingAsphalt shingles perform well in this climate when they are installed as a complete system: correct underlayment, a secondary water barrier in the required areas, proper edge metal, correct fastening pattern and adequate attic ventilation beneath. Take any of those away and the covering will not reach its rated life, regardless of the shingle grade.
The choice that matters most is between strip and architectural shingles. Architectural products are heavier, thicker and generally carry better wind ratings, which in a region where wind is the design driver is a meaningful difference.
Fastening and wind rating
The fastening pattern determines how the shingles resist uplift, and it is specified by the wind code for the exposure. A higher wind rating generally requires additional fasteners per shingle and enhanced sealing. This is one of the items an inspector verifies and one of the items an insurer will ask about, so it belongs in the documentation rather than being assumed.
Ventilation underneath
Attic ventilation matters more here than in cooler climates. Heat building in an attic drives up cooling costs and degrades the shingles from underneath, shortening their life. Intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge is the effective combination, and it needs to be balanced, since exhaust without adequate intake simply does not move air.
What actually fails
Shingle roofs here fail at the details first: pipe boots, chimney flashings, valleys and hips. The field of shingles usually outlasts the flashings by years. This is why a roof that is leaking is not automatically a roof that is finished, and why replacing the flashings at the right time extends the covering's useful life.
When to call
- Your shingle roof is at the end of its service life
- Shingles are curling, cracking or losing granules
- You are replacing a roof and comparing covering options
- Light-coloured granules are collecting in gutters
- An insurer has flagged the shingle age
- You want the wind rating of the roof improved
How the work is handled
- Inspect covering, deck, flashing and attic ventilation
- Confirm the wind exposure and required fastening pattern
- Tear off, inspect the deck and correct attachment
- Install water barrier, underlayment, edge metal and flashing
- Install shingles to the specified fastening and sealing pattern
What affects the cost
We do not quote a number before seeing the property, because the same job on two similar houses can need different work. These are the factors that move the scope:
- Roof area, pitch and complexity
- Shingle grade and its wind rating
- Extent of deck repair required after tear-off
- Flashing, valley and penetration work
- Attic ventilation corrections if needed
- Number of existing layers to be removed
Frequently asked questions
How long do shingles last in Florida?
Shorter than the manufacturer literature suggests, because of UV intensity and heat. An attic that is poorly ventilated shortens it further by cooking the shingles from underneath. Roofs here commonly reach replacement well before the nominal rating.
Are architectural shingles worth the extra cost?
Usually yes in this region, because they are heavier, more resistant to wind uplift and generally carry better wind ratings. Where wind is the design driver, that difference is the point rather than the appearance.
What is the difference between strip and architectural shingles?
Strip shingles are thinner and lighter, with a uniform appearance. Architectural shingles are thicker and laminated with a dimensional look, and they typically carry higher wind ratings and longer warranties. The performance difference matters more here than the appearance.
Does attic ventilation really affect shingle life?
Yes, considerably. Heat trapped in the attic degrades shingles from underneath and raises cooling costs. Balanced intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge is what moves air through, and exhaust without adequate intake achieves very little.
